Gabion wall construction is a widely used technique in civil engineering for slope stabilization, erosion control, and retaining wall applications. The gabion wall is built by assembling rectangular wire mesh baskets, commonly made from galvanized or PVC-coated steel wire, which are then filled with rocks, stones, or occasionally other durable material. The design relies on the mass and flexibility of the filled baskets to resist earth pressures and adapt to ground movement.The construction process begins with site preparation. The foundation must be excavated and leveled to ensure structural stability. It is often necessary to install a geotextile membrane beneath the wall to prevent soil migration and maintain drainage. The empty gabion baskets are then placed in position, forming the first course. Care must be taken to align the baskets correctly and secure them together using binding wire or special fasteners to maintain wall integrity.Once positioned, the baskets are filled by hand or with machinery. The filling material should be angular, hard, and durable, typically sourced from local quarries. Proper filling is crucial—larger stones are usually placed on visible faces for aesthetics, while smaller stones fill the interior voids for density and stability. As the wall rises, subsequent courses of gabion baskets are stacked atop each other. Each layer is securely tied or clipped to the one below and adjacent units, ensuring the wall behaves as a single, coherent structure.Depending on wall height and site conditions, the structure may be constructed vertically or with a stepped, battered profile to improve stability. For taller walls, internal tie wires or bracing are often installed to prevent bulging and maintain the baskets' shape over time. Proper drainage is essential; the permeable nature of gabion walls allows water to pass through, reducing hydrostatic pressure behind the wall and enhancing longevity.Finally, after the last course is filled and secured, the top of the wall can be finished according to functional or aesthetic requirements. Gabion walls blend naturally into the environment and often encourage vegetation growth, which can further reinforce the structure over time. Their durability, flexibility, and ease of installation make gabion walls a popular, sustainable choice in landscaping and engineering projects worldwide.
