Welded Gabion Mesh

Welded gabion mesh is a rigid, box-shaped structure made from welded steel wire panels that are assembled and then filled with stone or other suitable infill materials. It is widely used in civil engineering, landscaping, and architectural applications for earth retention, erosion control, and decorative purposes. Unlike woven gabions, welded gabion mesh provides a more uniform appearance, higher dimensional stability, and easier installation in many project settings. The mesh panels are typically manufactured from high-tensile, low-carbon steel wire that is welded at each intersection to form a rectangular grid. Common mesh openings range from 50 × 50 mm to 100 × 100 mm, depending on design requirements and stone size. To ensure durability and long service life, the wires are usually protected by heavy galvanizing, Galfan coating, or a combination of zinc coating and PVC or PE coating. These protective layers help the mesh resist corrosion, even in harsh or permanently wet environments such as riverbanks, coastal structures, and drainage channels.Standard welded gabion boxes are supplied as flat-packed panels that are folded on site and connected with spirals, clips, or lacing wire to form a box. Internal diaphragms divide the unit into cells to prevent stone migration and maintain shape. Once assembled, the boxes are positioned, aligned, and then filled with well-graded, hard, and durable rock. The fill material is usually placed carefully by hand along visible faces to achieve a stable and aesthetically pleasing surface, while the interior can be filled more quickly. After filling, lids are closed and securely fastened to create a monolithic structure. In retaining wall construction, welded gabion mesh systems offer flexibility and permeability. They can accommodate minor ground movement without cracking, and their open structure allows water to drain freely, reducing hydrostatic pressure behind the wall. This makes them a practical alternative to conventional concrete retaining walls, particularly on slopes, embankments, and road or railway cuttings. In hydraulic works, welded gabions are used for river training, channel lining, scour protection around bridge abutments, and shoreline stabilization. From a design perspective, welded gabion mesh structures can be stacked in steps, battered backward, or combined with geogrids to increase overall stability. They can be founded on compacted subgrade or simple granular bedding, which often reduces the need for complex foundations. Maintenance requirements are generally low; periodic inspection focuses on checking for wire damage, settlement, or displacement of units, especially after extreme weather events. In landscape and architectural applications, welded gabion mesh is increasingly chosen for its modern, textured appearance. It is used to form freestanding garden walls, privacy screens, acoustic barriers, cladding for building façades, and even benches and planters. Designers can vary the infill material—using natural stone, recycled concrete, glass rocks, or timber—to achieve different visual effects. The straight, clean lines achieved with welded mesh panels make them particularly suitable for contemporary designs. Overall, welded gabion mesh combines structural performance, durability, and aesthetic versatility in a single, modular system.
